A 28-year-old woman who allegedly stole Rs 22 lakh from the savings of her father and eloped with a man with whom she had got married secretly was arrested, police said Tuesday.
The police said that the father, who ran a pan shop, would save money and hand it over to his daughter to keep them safe. However, after she secretly got married she allegedly escaped with father’s Rs 22 lakh cash and 100 g gold.
According to police officials, the woman has been identified as Aarti Dinesh Dwivedi and she was arrested under the charges of theft and criminal breach of trust.
An officer said, “For the last 15 years, the complainant Dinesh claims that he would save up money for emergency purposes and give it to his daughter who would further keep the cash in a safe and hand over the keys to him.”
On May 31, 2024 as the woman was nowhere to be found, her brother Ajay tried reaching out to Aarti but her phone was switched off.
An officer said, “One day when her father contacted her, Aarti told him that she had secretly married one person named Vijay in 2018 and she has now eloped with him and wants to settle with him.”
“Subsequently when the family checked the safe, they found that the cash and gold ornaments were missing due to which they confronted her and Aarti claimed that she had not taken it,” an officer added.
However, the father claimed that she had stolen cash and ornaments from him and then lodged a complaint at Vanrai police station in July following which a case was registered.
Senior police inspector Rampiyare Rajbhar said, “After the case was registered, the woman had applied for anticipatory bail which was rejected after which the woman was traced and arrested last week.”
The police said that the woman was produced before court and she is now in judicial custody.
