A two-day exhibition by the first year postgraduate textile design students at National Institute of Design Ahmedabad was inaugurated on Tuesday.

The exhibition is about the final outcome of a six-week design project for textile design students, in masters course, and is being held in collaboration with SEWA (Self-Employed Women’s Association) and SEWA Trade Facilitation Centre (STFC) in Ahmedabad.

The students were introduced to SEWA (Self-Employed Women’s Association) by the course faculty with an overview into the organisation’s values, structure, and its long-standing relationship with women’s empowerment.

For further understanding students also visited and learnt from people working with SEWA which included a three-day visit to Radhanpur where they also explored the Hansiba Museum, which houses handcrafted traditional textile pieces from diverse communities inhabiting the region such as Choradia Rabari, Choradia Ahir, Ahir Brahmin and Chaudhari Patel.

The students interacted with women artisans from Bakutra and Koliwada, working with SEWA, to learn about the kind of work they do.

The students also attended a session at the SEWA Trade Facilitation Centre (STFC) in Ahmedabad to get an overview of the entire supply chain — from artisan to market.
