The royal families were once considered to be the upper echelon of the society for they ruled the lands, and had never-ending reserves of money and jewels. Things aren’t the same anymore as the money is depleting, and being from a royal family doesn’t really mean much in a democracy like India, and this conflict of the past and present is the base for the upcoming Netflix series The Royals. Here, Ishaan Khatter plays a ‘prince’ who is set to take over the estate of Morpur after his father’s death. Bhumi Pednekar plays an entrepreneur who is trying to convince the royal family to convert their palace into a hotel-like place where people can visit and experience a slice of history.

The trailer shows Ishaan as a spoilt rich brat who is just coming to terms with the financial mess of his seemingly rich family, as Bhumi’s character tries to fit in this world while also trying to get him to follow her rules. The trailer makes the series look like a rom-com where the leading man and woman fall in love after hating each other over ideological differences. The trailer also drops a few light-hearted moments making it appear like a wholesome series that doesn’t take itself too seriously. The show also stars Sakshi Tanwar, Zeenat Aman, Nora Fatehi, Dino Morea, Milind Soman, Alyy Khan, Chunky Panday, Vihaan Samat among others.

The Royals comes months after Ishaan Khatter’s notable success in The Perfect Couple, which was led by Nicole Kidman. The Netflix series gained recognition globally and though Ishaan had a small part in the series, his desi audience was quite impressed by his work on the show. He also played a significant role in Mira Nair’s adaptation of A Suitable Boy on Netflix. He hasn’t appeared in any film since 2023’s Pippa. For Bhumi Pednekar, this is her first leading role in a streaming show. She was last seen in the Mudassar Aziz film, Mere Husband Ki Biwi, which sank without a trace. Last year, she was also seen in the Netflix film Bhakshak.

The Royals starts streaming on Netflix from May 9.
