A coach attendant was arrested Monday for allegedly spreading a false message through his X account that his train had been attacked by a group of people in a religious procession in Surat, police said.
The accused, identified as Sunny Kumar Chaudhary (23), a resident of Haryana, was arrested on Tuesday afternoon by Government Railway Police (GRP), Surat, under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) sections pertaining to promoting enmity between groups and spreading false information. According to Western Railway police, the accused was on duty on the Suryanagari Express train, which runs between Bandra and Jodhpur.
Sources in GRP said the train had to halt at Anjana area in Surat following a technical fault in the goods train ahead of it on the same track. Around this time, a religious procession was passing through the railway culvert at Anjana.
Surat GRP Police Inspector Vaibhav Ahir told The Indian Express, “Several people passed through the area as part of the procession. Our team reached the spot after learning about the incident (through the X post) and checked the tracks. We found no stones. We checked the cabin outside and there was no damage even to the window panes of seats 49, 50, 51 (as mentioned in the post).”
He further said, “We also talked to the people who were part of the procession. It turned out to be a fake message spread by the coach attendant. We have arrested him and are trying to find out the reason behind his post. We have to question the accused in detail.”
On Monday afternoon, B-3 coach attendant Choudhary put out a message in Hindi on his X, formerly Twitter, handle, claiming he had “saved the train after putting his own life at risk”.
