South Korea’s newly president, Lee Jae-myung held a telephonic conversation with US President Donald Trump, Lee’s office said on Friday, according to Reuters.
During the call, both leaders agreed to work towards an agreement on tariffs. “They resolved to make efforts to reach a satisfactory agreement on tariffs as soon as possible,” Lee’s office said in a statement, Reuters reported. They also agreed to push for progress through working-level discussions.
President Trump is also learnt to have invited Lee to visit the United States, and both the leaders said they would try to meet soon—either as part of a larger international meeting or during a direct visit. “They agreed to meet at the earliest opportunity for deeper talks on the future of the alliance,” the statement said.
Lee became president after winning a snap election held on June 3. The vote followed the impeachment and removal of former president Yoon Suk Yeol. Lee officially took office on Wednesday.
The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
