A man tried to immolate himself outside Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’s official bungalow ‘Varsha’ in Malabar Hill on Wednesday. However, timely intervention by the Mumbai police prevented him from doing so. The man was booked and served a notice by the police.

The person has been identified as Ajit Ramkrishna Maindargi, 39, a resident of Solapur district in Maharashtra.

According to the police, Maindargi was trying to enter the Varsha bungalow to meet the chief minister on Wednesday afternoon. However, he was stopped by the security personnel, who refused to allow him to meet Fadnavis.

Maindargi then stepped back and reportedly took out a bottle and poured a petrol-like inflammatory liquid on himself to self-immolate.

However, before he could harm himself, policemen posted at the bungalow quickly overpowered Maindargi and detained him. A lighter was seized from his pocket.

Festive offer

He was then taken to the Malabar Hill police station in Mumbai.

The Mumbai police had already received intelligence from their counterpart in Chawdi police station in Solapur regarding a possible self-immolation attempt by Maindargi outside the chief minister’s house. Hence, two policemen had been keeping watch on Maindargi’s movement and timely nabbed him before he could harm himself, the police stated.
