Several injured as car rams into walkway at Manila Airport, driver detained

Several people were reported to be injured after a car crashed into the passengers entrance of Manila’s Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) on Sunday, near the Terminal 1 departure area, authorities said.

The airport in a statement said the initial reports suggest that “vehicular accident” took place after the car crashed through the outer railing into the walkway near the entrance of NAIA Terminal 1.

The NAIA in a statement said “We understand the concern this incident has caused, especially as images have circulated on social media. We urge the public not to speculate and to wait for verified updates, which will be issued as soon as they become available,” Reuters reported.

According to images posted by DZBB radio station, one person was seen lying on the ground and receiving medical aid. Philippine National Police have detained the driver of the vehicle.

In a press release, the airport further added that an official confirmation was awaited into the reason behind the crash and exact number of those injured in the incident.

Glass was seen shattered near the Terminal 1 departure area and the front of the car was damaged after hitting the airport doors.

The area has been cordoned off and personnel of NNIC, the Philippine National Police, and Manila International Airport Authority Security were present at the spot conducting the investigation.
