A photo of a passenger casually lying on a luggage rack in the chair car coach of an Indian train has sparked plenty of reactions online. The image shows the man casually using his phone as if he was resting on a regular train berth.
Shared on Reddit’s r/IndianRailways, the image captures the man stretched out in the overhead space, nestled amid several bags. The post was humorously titled, “Bro needs to hesitate,” with a caption that read, “Bro was so desperate, he literally lied into the luggage compartment of the chair car.” According to comments, the snapshot was likely taken mid-journey by another commuter.
The photo quickly went viral, drawing a mix of amusement, concern, and social commentary. One Redditor joked, “This is peak Indian Railways innovation,” while another took a more serious tone, saying, “Bro needs to be in jail for putting others’ lives in danger.”

Many pointed out that while this kind of ‘jugaad’ might seem funny, it poses serious safety risks. A user commented, “How is that even allowed, even in CCs running in Bihar, at most they allow people in alleyway, but never on luggage rack.”
Another added a biting observation: “Tbh an average Indian is considered as luggage here, the way our trains are packed (UP and Bihar trains specifically) it’s clearly a luggage because no sane human travel this way.”
Some people, though, could relate. One wrote, “I was in the same situation, but it was grill in the passenger compartment. Had to because during Pongal, it’s hard even to find a place to stand.”
Odd seating arrangements on Indian trains are hardly new. Last year, a video surfaced showing a passenger crafting a DIY hammock between berths in a packed train, turning heads for his creativity in making space where there was none.
