The Thane Government Railway Police (GRP), which is investigating the August 28 assault on a 72-year-old man by a group of men who falsely accused him of carrying beef aboard a Mumbai-bound train, has arrested one more accused.
“Suresh Jadhav, 19, was arrested and produced in court on Wednesday and was remanded in police custody up to Friday,” said Archana Dusane, Senior Inspector of Thane GRP. Jadhav was involved in shooting a video of the attack, she added.
Jadhav and three other Dhule-based accused – Akash Awhad, 30; Nitesh Ahire, 30; and Jayesh Mohite, 21 – heading to Mumbai for a police recruitment drive allegedly assaulted Jalgaon-based senior citizen Ashraf Ali Sayyed Hussain aboard the Dhule-CSMT Express on August 28.
A video of the incident went viral on social media the next day and the police located Hussain who initially did not file a complaint. After he lodged a complaint, the police arrested three accused. But, the three were immediately released on bail by the court.
Facing criticism over not preparing a strong case against the accused, the Thane GRP on Monday added charges of dacoity and hurting religious feelings to the case. Since the dacoity charge is non-bailable, the GRP officials approached the court and got the bail of the three accused cancelled. Non-bailable warrants were issued. The three will soon be arrested, Dusane said.
