Hong Kong’s post office has said that it will suspend the goods mail services by sea and the air mail postal service to the United States as US President Donald Trump led administration announced plans to charge small-value parcels from Hong Kong, the government officials said on Wednesday.
The Hong Kong Post in a statement said, “When sending items to the US, people in Hong Kong should be prepared to pay exorbitant and unreasonable fees due to the US’s unreasonable and bullying acts,” Reuters reported.
Earlier, the US government had announced to end the customs exception of small-value parcels coming in from Hong Kong to America without paying any tax, as the Trump administration imposed a 120% tariff from May 2.
“The US is unreasonable, bullying and imposing tariffs abusively. Hong Kong post will definitely not collect any so-called tariffs on behalf of the US,” the southern Chinese city’s post office said.
However, a US government’s notice earlier said that postal items from Hong Kong containing only documents without goods, would not be affected. The notice further added that Hong Kong, a special administrative region of China, has been imposed with similar tariffs that of Beijing.
The Hong Kong government stated, “For sending items to the US, the public in Hong Kong should be prepared to pay exorbitant and unreasonable fees due to the US’ unreasonable and bullying acts,” AP reported.
Trump, on April 2, announced sweeping reciprocal tariffs on all its global trading partners ranging from 10% to 50%, but later suspended it for 90 days. China was an exception which has been subjected to a 145% tariff.
