Gujarat: Four cousins from Ahmedabad drown in river in Kheda; search on for two others feared dead

Four youths, all cousins, from Naroda in Ahmedabad drowned while taking a dip in the Meshwa River near Kanij in Mahemdavad taluka of Kheda district on Wednesday evening. Two others, including one from Kanij and another from Ahmedabad, are feared drowned. Search and rescue operations are on to retrieve the body of the two missing persons.

The deceased have been identified as Jinal, Divya, Falguni and Dhruv — all residents of Naroda in Ahmedabad. Bhumika from Kanij and Mayur from Naroda are yet to be found.

Police officials of Mehmadabad police station said that all the six persons were cousins who decided to take a dip in the river during a meet-up in Kanij village. According to the police, the cousins were swept away by the river currents and began screaming for help. Although locals gathered at the spot almost immediately, the group could not be saved.

Local rescuers as well as police and fire department officials rushed to the spot to launch a rescue operation. The rescuers were able to retrieve the bodies of Jinal, Divya, Falguni and Dhruv while the search was on for Bhumika and Mayur.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA from Mehmadabad, Arjunsinh Chauhan, also rushed to the spot to oversee the search operations.
Kheda district Superintendent of Police Rajesh Ghadiya and District Collector Amit Prakash also arrived at the spot, where the rescue operations continued to retrieve the bodies of the two persons, who are feared drowned.
