Two former AAP MLAs, Asim Ahmed Khan and Colonel Devender Sehrawat, joined the Delhi Congress on Monday.
While Khan had served as a Cabinet minister in the AAP government in 2015, Colonel Sehrawat had won from Bijwasan in the 2015 Assembly polls.
Khan had headed several ministries in 2015, including food and civil supply, environment and forest as well as minority affairs, after he won the Matia Mahal seat, beating five-time sitting MLA Shoaib Iqbal. In October 2015, he was removed from the primary membership of the party by then-Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal over corruption charges.
Khan, who previously served as the chairman of the Hajj Committee, is expected to get a ticket from the Congress in the 2025 polls.
Colonel Sehrawat, meanwhile, was elected as AAP MLA from Bijwasan in the 2015 polls. However, he was suspended from the party after he, in 2016, wrote to Kejriwal levelling allegations against four senior party leaders. He went on to join the BJP in 2019 and was appointed the in charge of Shiv Sena in Delhi in 2023.
Colonel Sehrawat had defeated the BJP candidate from Bijwasan by around 19,500 votes in the 2015 polls. He did not contest the 2020 Assembly polls.
The AAP has fielded Samajwadi Party turncoat Surender Bharadwaj from Bijwasan this time.
Meanwhile, the Delhi Congress held a meeting on Monday on manifesto preparation for the upcoming Assembly elections. Sources indicate that the party is likely to include a promise of Rs 3,000 per month for women and 400 units of free electricity in its manifesto.
Delhi Congress president Devender Yadav told mediapersons that the party held interactions with people over what should be included in the manifesto. “We believe that only those promises should be made that can be fulfilled. The Congress does not believe in mere talking,” he added.
