The Rashtriya Lok Dal, which has been making efforts to expand its base outside western Uttar Pradesh, has planned a series of outreach programmes across neighbouring states. One such event will be held at Alwar on December 23, the birth anniversary of former prime minister Chaudhary Charan Singh. During the event, a statue of the late leader will be unveiled and a rally will be organised. RLD president and Union Minister Jayant Chaudhary and senior BJP leader and Union Minister Bhupender Yadav will address the rally. Former MP Malook Nagar, a Gurjar leader who is the RLD’s in-charge of Rajasthan, has been tasked to oversee the preparations for the rally.

Legal Expertise

The chairman of the Joint Parliamentary Committee on ‘One Nation One Election’, P P Chaudhary, seems to be the veteran the BJP banks on for its crucial reform legislation. Chaudhary was also the chairperson of the joint committee on Jan Vishwas (Amendment of Provisions) Bill, 2022; in 2021, he was appointed as the chairman of the joint committee on Personal Data Protection Bill, 2019. Before him, the BJP’s trustworthy legal expert for key Bills was Bhupender Yadav, currently a Cabinet Minister, who headed as many as 13 panels over the years.

Train Ties

Speaking at the Justice ES Venkataramiah Centennial Memorial Lecture, his daughter and Supreme Court judge Justice B V Nagarathna recalled a story she heard from her father. Justice Venkataramaiah, as a young lawyer in pre-Independent India, was traveling to Nagpur to attend a lawyers’ conference. On the Grand Trunk Express train, he met another young lawyer. Decades later, the two men met again — only this time it was Venkataramiah being sworn in as the Chief Justice of India and President R Venkataraman administering the oath of office to him at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
