To curb overspeeding on Mumbai Coastal Road’s southward stretch between Marine Drive and Worli, the Mumbai police is set to deploy two interceptor vehicles. Meanwhile, the BMC is set to install CCTV cameras equipped with speed-tracking at the road.

At present, the entire 10-km stretch of the high-speed corridor is operational and locals allege during night luxury cars travel at high speed, causing noise pollution. The speed limit on the coastal road is around 60 kmph.

“The BMC’s CCTV cameras don’t have speedometers. So, the RTO has asked us to deploy interceptor vehicles on the coastal road. Initially, two such units will be deployed starting next week. In the meantime, the BMC will also install advanced cameras equipped with Advanced Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology,” Anil Kumbhare, Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic), told The Indian Express on Friday.

The move comes after residents from Breach Candy, Worli complained about noise pollution caused by speeding vehicles late at night. Viren Shah, a local resident, on Friday also wrote a letter to the Mumbai police as well as the CMO expressing concern over the noise pollution.

Posting a video of speeding vehicles on X, the Breach Candy Resident’s Forum (BCRF) said, “Every Sunday, supercars race along the Coastal Road at high speeds, creating excessive noise and disturbing residents’ peace. Despite multiple appeals, no action has been taken yet.”
