Colombian Senator Miguel Uribe, who is likely to run for presidency in 2026, was shot at a campaign rally in Bogota on Saturday, according to the national police. While there is no official report on the his condition so far, the 39-year-old is said to be in a serious condition after being taken to a hospital.
Uribe is a member of the opposition conservative Democratic Center party, founded by former Colombian President Alvaro Uribe. Images circulating on social media showed the senator covered in blood, apparently with a head wound, being held by several people.
Bogota’s Mayor Carlos Galan said Uribe was receiving emergency medical care after being shot in Fontibon district, and that “the entire hospital network” was on alert, if he needed to be transferred.
The suspected attacker has been arrested by the law enforcement authorities, the mayor added.
“Ay” Colombia y su violencia eterna. Quieren matar al hijo de una árabe en Bogotá,que ya habían asesinado, y no se debe matar en el corazón del mundo. Matan al hijo y a la madre.
Respeten la vida, esa es la linea roja. Colombia no debe matar a sus hijos, porque ellos tambien son…

The Colombian government issued a statement condemning the attack, while the Colombian President Gustavo Petro expressed his solidarity with the senator’s family in a post on X, where he said “I don’t know how to ease your pain. It is the pain of a mother lost, and of a wounded homeland.”

According to Uribe’s Democratic Center party, the senator was hosting a campaign event in a public park in the Fontibon neighborhood in Bogota on Saturday when “armed subjects shot him in the back.” The party described the attack on Uribe as serious but didn’t disclose the situation of the senator.
Colombia’s Defense Minister Pedro Sanchez said he has visited the hospital where Senator Uribe is being treated. Sanchez informed that police have arrested a suspect and the investigation was on to identify whether others were involved.
