Aishwarya Sakhuja, a type 1 diabetic, reveals diet tweaks she incorporated in her routine: ‘I’m not a doctor’

Actor and model Aishwarya Sakhuja Nag recently shared some dietary tweaks she has incorporated as a type 1 diabetic. Taking to Instagram, the Saas Bina Sasural actor mentioned, “I’m not a doctor and I’m here sharing my personal experience as a type 1 diabetic. Everybody is different, and these tips have worked for me.”

“Barley is high fibre, so a better choice for us diabetics. Fresh juice will cause your levels to spike, so stick to a low-GI fresh fruit any day. While I do miss my everyday aata rotis, but amaranth is again high in fibre, which will keep my levels in check,” said Aishwarya.

Adding that she skips dairy because “it contains lactose, which will cause elevated blood levels,” she stressed that it comes with a background of cruelty towards cows.

“Chips and soda are of course a big NOOOO for me.. dry fruits are not only full of nutrients but will also keep you full for long…”

Taking a cue from her revelation, let’s understand type 1 diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition in which the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas.

“Since insulin plays a vital role in regulating blood sugar levels, its absence or extremely low levels lead to a buildup of glucose in the blood, resulting in type 1 diabetes. This condition is typically diagnosed in children and young adults, although it can occur at any age,” said Dr Manisha Arora, director, internal medicine, CK Birla Hospital, Delhi.

The exact cause of this immune response is not fully understood, but genetic and environmental factors may play a role.

Are these diet tweaks suitable for type 1 diabetics?

Yes, dietary adjustments are crucial in managing type 1 diabetes. “Since insulin dosage needs to be balanced with carbohydrate intake, tracking and managing the type and amount of carbohydrates consumed becomes essential,” said Dr Arora.

A balanced diet that includes complex carbohydrates, such as amaranth, along with fruits and nuts that are low in calories, healthy fats, and adequate protein helps maintain stable blood sugar levels. “These dietary habits not only aid in glycemic control but also support overall health and well-being in individuals with type 1 diabetes,” added Dr Arora.

For individuals with type 1 diabetes, it is essential to understand the close relationship between diet, insulin, and blood sugar levels.

“Regular monitoring of blood glucose is necessary to adjust insulin doses appropriately. Since the pancreas cannot produce insulin in this condition, insulin therapy is essential and cannot be replaced by oral medications. Alongside insulin administration, a well-planned diet and consistent monitoring form the cornerstone of effective diabetes management,” said Dr Arora.
