During Wednesday’s “Reclaim the Night” protest over the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, the Kolkata Police arrested one person in Narendrapur for allegedly harassing a woman protester.
A 47-year-old-man, Raju Kumar Nandy, was arrested from Narendrapur and booked for trying to outrage the modesty of a woman during the candlelight march. According to police, a woman (37) filed a complaint, naming the accused and said she was allegedly stalked, and subjected to lewd comments by the accused who also tried to outrage her modesty.
Before filing the police complaint, the accused was beaten up by a crowd of nearly 400 people. The protesters also allegedly assaulted the police team which tried to rescue Nandy and damaged their vehicle. Several police personnel were injured in the attack.
A separate FIR has been registered against unknown people for wrongful confinement, grievous hurt, abetment, wrongful assembly, and obstructing public servants from discharging their duties, after a complaint was filed by the Additional OC of Netaji Nagar Police Station, who was on duty in the area.
In Barasat, 18 supporters of the CPIML, including five women, were detained after their verbal altercation with the police.
The group was arrested allegedly for continuing the protest beyond the permitted time of 12 midnight, said police.
In another incident, in Jadavpur, a case was lodged under section 132/3 (5) of the BNS for assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty. In his complaint, Sudip Lakra, Sub-Inspector of Jadavpur Police Station said, that on September 5, at about 1:35 am, while he was on duty, he was stopped by nearly 200 unknown protesters at the 8B Bus Stand, who used criminal force to deter him from discharging official duty.
