A 29-year-old software engineer from Tamil Nadu who had come to Bengaluru to collect his visa to travel to the United States died in a road accident after the car he was travelling in fell from the Yeshwantpur flyover early on Tuesday.

The police identified the deceased as S Shabarish, a resident of Salem in Tamil Nadu.

The accident occurred at around 3.45 am as Shabarish and his friends Mithun Chakravarthy (29), Anushree (23), and Shankar Ram (29) were heading towards Tumakuru. Chakravarthy, who was at the wheel, lost control of the vehicle while negotiating a curve on the flyover, the police said.

The car jumped the road median, collided with a motorcycle driven by Manjunath, 38, an electrician from Kacharakanahalli, and then plummeted 40 feet off the flyover after hitting the side wall. Shabarish, who was seated next to Chakravarthy, did not survive the accident. All the other passengers are critically injured and in hospital.

Shabarish and Mithun had arrived in Bengaluru from Salem on Monday morning. Shabarish, who was set to fly to the US in a few weeks, had collected his visa and spent the day shopping for his trip with Anushree and Shankar Ram, cousins staying in Malleswaram. The group visited a mall in Yeshwantpur on Tuesday evening and reportedly went to a nearby pub before heading to Ram’s paying guest accommodation to drop off their shopping bags.

Festive offer

The accident occurred when they went on a drive in search of food.

A police officer said that the car was allegedly speeding at over 120 kmph at the time of the crash. The police also said that they found an empty bottle inside the car and suspected that the occupants were drunk.

“We had parked our vehicles and were waiting for our trip when we heard a loud noise. Upon checking, we found that a car had fallen from the flyover. Fortunately, it fell in an empty area. We immediately informed the local police who shifted them to the hospital,” an autorickshaw driver who was in the area said.
