Trinamool Congress (TMC) Lok Sabha MP Kalyan Banerjee on Saturday said that while giving a job to a party leader in a law college in Kolkata is unacceptable, party workers should be considered for such positions.
“It is my personal opinion. I am not speaking on behalf of the party. This is unacceptable. Why? Were there no other workers? Neta will do Netajiri (party leaders will do party work), but they should have been given a job. I will be a leader and I will also get a job. This is not right. And I cannot support this,” Banerjee said while speaking with media persons.
The reaction comes in the wake of the alleged rape of a 24-year-old student in a college in Kolkata on June 25. The prime accused Monojit Mishra, who is a former Trinamool Congress student leader, was appointed as casual staff by the college’s governing body. Mishra, a former student and TMC leader of the college virtually ran the college.
Kalyan Banerjee earlier courted controversy over the rape incident, when he said that if “a friend rapes a friend, how can one ensure security.” He had also questioned whether police will be posted in schools and colleges.
Trinamool Congress distanced itself from Kalyan Banerjee’s remark, saying it was his personal comment.
Later, he also targeted fellow TMC MP Mahua Moitra, over her “misogynist” remark. “Mahua has returned after her honeymoon and started fighting with me. What is she? She has broken up a 49-year-old marriage and narrated a guy who is 65 years of age. Did she not hurt the lady,” Kalyan Benarjee had said.
