Disputes over property between the two families had escalated in recent years. Jagir has two children — Bachittar and Palwinder Kaur — while Gurmeet has two sons, Sahil and Sagar.

According to Amritsar North ACP Rishabh Bhola, “the incident took place right outside the police station where both parties had been summoned in connection with a prior complaint. Tarsem used his licensed revolver to fire four rounds”.

“Tarsem Singh was apprehended immediately by police stationed at the checkpoint. Further investigation is ongoing,” he added.

Speaking to the media, Jagir’s daughter, Palwinder, 45, alleged, “my mother was physically assaulted two days ago by the sons of Gurmeet Kaur. We had submitted a complaint at Sadar police station. In response, police summoned both parties today (Friday)”.

She said further her father expelled her mother from the home. “My mother raised us by doing embroidery work.

When we grew up, my brother and I asked for our share in the property. My father refused, so we took the matter to court. The case is still pending,” Palwinder added.

Police said Jagir is currently in the ICU with a gunshot wound to the neck, while her daughter-in-law is under medical supervision.

The investigation is ongoing to determine the full sequence of events and whether further charges will be filed.
