50 shanties gutted after massive fire breaks out in Pune’s Chandan Nagar

At least 50 shanties were gutted in a major blaze that broke out in a slum in Pune’s Chandan Nagar during the early hours of Wednesday.

Explosions of at least 15 cylinders were reported and the fire was brought under control by over 15 fire tenders. No casualties were reported.

Officials from Pune Fire Brigade control room said that the fire started around 5 am in Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar slum area in Chandan Nagar. The blaze was controlled around 6.45 am after over 15 fire tenders and several additional water tankers were deployed by the fire brigade. Close to 80 firefighters were part of the operation. Officials said that the cause and starting point of the fire were yet to be known.

“As the fire started spreading, occupants of the shanties, most of which had tin walls and roofs, evacuated their homes with as many belongings they could take with them. We sprayed water from all sides to control the fire. The fire was finally controlled around 6.45 am. Subsequently cooling operation was conducted to avert any secondary fires. Majority of the belongings of the people have been gutted as at least 50 shanties were completely damaged.” A fire brigade official said.
