An exhibition dedicated to well-known sculptor Himmat Shah, featuring several great artists from across the country, opened in Ahmedabad Friday. The exhibition will be on till June 10. This year’s event also coincided with Earth Month, a global celebration that is still gaining traction in India.
Titled ‘Purusha Prakriti’, the show curated by art critic Uma Nair, takes from a term rooted in Indian philosophy, referring to the dual nature of existence: the material and the spiritual. It encompasses both the tangible aspects of life and the intangible elements like emotions, thoughts, and consciousness. This year’s theme aimed to leave a lasting impression on viewers, connecting deeply with their inner lives through evocative art. Shah, who was born in Lothal, died last month.
According to Devin Gawarwala, Director of Bespoke Gallery, which is hosting the exhibition, the show was designed to forge a symbolic “code” with the people of Ahmedabad. Calling it “an emotional dialogue created through the significance of art”, Gawarwala said “The goal was to touch lives by connecting with intangible human experiences such as joy, sorrow, and nature through visual expression.”
Gawarwala also emphasised that the gallery sources artworks from artists around the world, thanks to strong international relationships. Each exhibition is meticulously planned around a specific theme, bringing together diverse and powerful artworks. The gallery sought to raise awareness about environmental issues while enhancing its international appeal through relevant global themes.
The exhibition features 40 artists, including greats from Gujarat like KG Subramanyan, Rini Dhumal, Manu Parekh and Jyoti Bhatt. There are three international participants, two from Ahmedabad, five from Baroda, and several others from across India.
Poonam Bhatnagar from New Delhi presented two paintings. Bhatnagar, who began her artistic journey two decades ago, says her works are rich in spiritual symbolism and “inspired by the inner forces she feels within herself”.
