Hashem Abedi, the brother of the Manchester Arena bomber, Saturday attacked three prison officers at HMP Frankland in County Durham, leaving them with life-threatening injuries, BBC reported citing sources.
Abedi allegedly threw hot cooking oil at the officers and used homemade weapons to stab them. As of 16:00 BST (8:30pm IST) on Saturday, one of the female officers who had been treated in hospital was discharged.
The Prison Service confirmed the assault, stating that the three officers were treated in hospital after the attack and that police are investigating the incident.
Hashem Abedi, aged 28, was convicted in 2020 of 22 counts of murder, attempted murder, and conspiracy to cause an explosion following the 2017 Manchester Arena bombing, which killed 22 people. After the Prison Officers’ Association named Abedi as the assailant, a government source confirmed his involvement in the attack.
