Actor Urvashi Dholakia gained national fame after playing Komolika in Star Plus’ popular serial Kasautii Zindagii Kay. This era of Indian television was known for putting women in the forefront, even though the storylines in most shows weren’t exactly progressive. In a recent interview, as Urvashi spoke about her most popular television role, she asserted that she is “not a feminist” and said that the idea of feminism has gotten “out of control.”
In a chat with Hauterrfly, Urvashi said that the concept of feminism has “wavered a little bit. It started with equal rights and then suddenly I started hearing, ‘We are above men’. When did that start? If you started with equality, then stick to equality. Things have not been that easy for women, and I agree but that doesn’t mean that you take the path of war. Fight your way through it.”
She then spoke about Ekta Kapoor and said that she “always believed in uplifting other women.” She recalled that when she was offered the part of Komolika, Ekta told her that she was “going to be the next big sex bomb on TV.” Urvashi said that she was asked to parade around the Balaji Telefilms’ office in her look and she couldn’t really figure out what Ekta expected out of her.

Urvashi said that she was quite “nervous” when she landed on the set and it was her nervous behaviour that led her to play with her hair, which then became a signature Komolika move. “My style started because of my nervousness and then it just continued,” she said. When told that she was a part of the millennial pop culture, she said that she did face some criticism for being over the top at the time. “Eventually, I realised everyone was liking me, not hating me. They loved to hate me. It’s a different emotion,” she said.
Urvashi is currently a part of Hotstar’s Power of Paanch, which has also been produced by Ekta Kapoor.
