MediaTek’s newest chipset – the Dimensity 8400 is all set to disrupt the mid-range smartphone segment with its “All Big Core” CPU design. Compared to its predecessor (Dimensity 8300), the latest from MediaTek offers 41 per cent more multi-core performance while consuming around 44 per cent less energy.

Announced at an event in China, MediaTek said that the Dimensity 8400’s architecture is inspired by its latest flagship – the Dimensity 9400, which powers devices like the recently launched Oppo Find X8 Pro.

With the Dimensity 8400, MediaTek seems to have ditched the smaller energy-efficient cores and instead packs eight ARM Cortex-A725 cores that operate at 3.25GHz. The company also seems to have upgraded the onboard graphics, with the new chipset now packing the Mali-G720 GPU, which the company says offers a performance bump of 24 per cent while consuming 42 per cent less power.

MediaTek also says that the new GPU works with its Frame Rate Converter and Adaptive Gaming Technology 3.0, which makes gameplay smoother and optimises performance in real-time. It also packs in the NPU 880, which can handle large language models, making it capable of generating images and text as well as giving context-aware replies. Built on TSMC’s 2nd gen 4nm process, the Dimensity 8400 supports camera sensors up to 320MP and features the Imagiq 1080 14-bit HDR ISP.

The first wave of Dimensity 8400 devices will be hitting the market by the end of the year, with Xiaomi confirming that the Redmi Turbo 4 will be the first phone in the world with the newly launched chipset. Realme is also expected to follow suit and launch a new phone with the chipset, but it remains to be seen if these devices will be exclusive to China.
